Re-wiring Your House Yourself

Rewiring the whole house is quite a tedious job. If doing it yourself it might be more costly especially if you have not taken the time to analyze what is needed. If living in an old house chances are that the wiring in it is not updated. If not well trained rewiring yourself can endanger the safety of the home and cause fires due to use of faulty materials. An electrician will be able to analyze the situation and establish what one should do and the cost of the project in addition, they will provide guideline on what you will need to do to succeed.

To eliminate any form of danger like fire, exposed wires that could cause shock and wrong circuit connections, you need to ask yourself if you feel comfortable or qualified to do the job. Once this is established you can visit the electric shops to see what will be needed to get the job done.

The dangers one is exposed to include:

Using fuses with higher amps than the wires can handle. This makes the wires overheat damaging the insulation increasing the chances of a fire breaking out.

Over lamping is another danger which even violates the codes. If the heat from the bulb is very high, it can cause the socket to melt posing more danger.

Leaving the junction box uncovered is another danger that will cause shock. If the wires are high up the danger is minimized though one will need to invest in a cover and cover the junction box.

To prevent any further damage or the need of calling the electrician, there are a few things that one can do:

The first consideration is safety. If repairing anything, ensure it is not plugged and power has been turned off.Ensure the parts you use are the right ones. No compromises should be made on the quality of the wiring.

If unsure of the requirements consult with an electrician.

An electrician that is licensed is very handy when one is stuck. They will give the proper advice on what to do and can even help in completing the wiring if it is complicated.

The information in the internet is not always accurate and you need to research more for the right appliances and solutions that fall within your budget. The local electrical shops are useful too as they know what is needed and fall within the codes of electrification.

If you have any intentions to buy a house that is old it is good to hire an electrician to check the wiring. In addition, they check on the wires and see if they are frayed or dry, panel corrosion and any other illegal connections that might have been done by previous owners. Electrical codes are revised ever so often and since this is an old house there may be some violations that may have occurred that will need to be adjusted. Remember the most important thing that you need to keep in mind is to switch off circuit at the main source.
